A lighting design project in Eskilstuna, Sweden, that integrates sustainable lighting poles from Tehomet, has received second place in the 2024 LUCI Cities & Lighting Awards. The prestigious award recognises cities for lighting initiatives that foster social, cultural, and economic development, while aligning with global goals for urban sustainability.
Organised by LUCI(Lighting Urban Community International), the competition honours public lighting projects that transform urban environments and enhance citizens’ quality of life. This year’s awarded entry, titled Hamngatan and MDU Plaza, is a prime example of sustainable urban lighting that reimagines night-time public spaces through thoughtful design and environmental responsibility.
Sustainable Urban Lighting Through International Collaboration
The Eskilstuna project was realised through the close collaboration of the City of Eskilstuna, lighting designer Chiara Carucci, and supplier Flux AB, with custom lighting poles provided by Tehomet. The result is a dynamic plaza that blends city functionality with the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.
Tehomet’s engineered wooden poles were selected for their visual warmth, design adaptability, and low carbon footprint. The installation features warm-tone, low-level lighting, integrated seamlessly into the landscape design with an emphasis on safety, walkability, and ecological values.
Advanced lighting techniques include overhead wire-mounted lighting at pedestrian crossings, full cutoff designs to reduce light pollution, and smart controls that minimise energy use during low-traffic hours. These innovations not only elevate the atmosphere of the urban nightscape but also contribute to environmental sustainability and social connectivity.
The Hamngatan and MDU Plaza project showcases how Nordic lighting innovation and PEFC-certified wooden polescan shape a more inclusive, safe, and beautiful city. Tehomet is proud to be part of this award-winning initiative that sets a new standard for urban lighting design in Europe.
